Thanks for your note, Carol. I might have quite good knowledge of stations because of a large reference library of my own, but, although I live quite near Ordington (and know the station), there is always truly local knowledge which will enhance any article. I would suggest that your sentence is tacked on the end of the first paragraph since that is all about the station, and will help to make the article less "bitty" however. As for the Cannon Street trains, then by all means add them if they run all day. Trains from my own local station only run there at peak times. That could be added to the list of places trains go to - ie Cannon Street (peak times only) perhaps? You may well get hooked on Wiki if you're not careful!!! Peter Shearan 06:10, 8 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Hello
[edit]I've come across your name on the Vehicle-to-grid page where you correctly corrected "complementary" and "intermittent" to their correct spellings. However, it's habit of mine to see what smart people like you are into, and I went to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/CarolGray to see what else you're interested in, to see if I can find some topics I'd be interested in too, to add to my watchlist. I've noticed that in a few cases you corrected the phrase "under the circumstances" to "in the circumstances." I'd like to tell you that in US English I've constantly heard the phrase "under the circumstances," and it sounds very right to my ears. Perhaps my midwestern English as a second language English isn't as proper as your native Southeastern London one, but I thought I'd mention it, so perhaps next time you see the "under the circumstances" phrase, you may or may not want to just let it go, instead of getting a sudden urge to do the right thing, and correct it. Peace. :)
The original meaning of "circumstance" is "around where you are standing", hence, strictly speaking, you can't be under a circumstance. However, I've discovered that American articles use "under the circumstances" so frequently that it must be the norm over there. I'll go away and do something else. CarolGray 17:14, 8 November 2005 (UTC) No, no, don't go away, please, Wikipedia is fun, and I too like seeing things spelled correctly! Sillybilly 13:08, 10 November 2005 (UTC)
Waterloo
[edit]Hello Carol. Thanks for your message. I'd recommend directing or redirecting to Lambeth (the place rather than the borough). Waterloo as a district is a bit of a fiction but nonetheless it is in common parlance as a place so deserves a mention but probably not a full article. Mrsteviec 12:04, 24 November 2005 (UTC)

Excessive detail.
[edit]Hi Carol. I am happy to see that there is someone going through my work checking spellings, grammar and tidying up my sentences, as being an engineer these are not my strong points. However I would prefer it if you didn't remove facts I have written because you belive it is excessive. In my experience an encyclopedia should contain as much information as possible, and is bulit around excessive detail. When a person looks up Orpington I believe that that person has done so to find out as much information about it's history and current status as possible, therefore there is no such thing as being excessive when it comes to information. Orpington
[edit]Hi Carol. I'm glad to see you are also editing Orpington. It is now one of the more extensive suburban London articles and really is crying out for some fantastic images. I don't suppose you have access to any suitable (copyright free) images? Mrsteviec 11:52, 2 February 2006 (UTC)
- Thats great. It seemed wrong that we have more images of the chicken than the town. Mrsteviec 16:29, 2 February 2006 (UTC)
Babe Ruth
[edit]I'm posting this message on you Talk Page either because you've contributed to the article Babe Ruth, or because you've edited other baseball or sports related articles. I've recently completed a revision of this article at Babe Ruth/rewrite. If you have the time, I'd appreciated it if you'd compare the articles and leave any feedback you might have on the rewrite discussion page. I'd like to reach a consensus before makeing major changes to the main article. Thanks for your help. --djrobgordon 20:11, 4 February 2006 (UTC)
Links in articles
[edit]- Hello. Wikipedia is not supposed to be a collection of links. Only the most relevant links to relevant content should be listed. Links to a variety of clubs, schools and leisure facilities are non-relevant to an encyclopedic article about a place. Besides they are already linked within the article (I would probably say without need there either). The kind of links needed are those that provide similar content to the article title rather than things that are just associated by name. In this case the link to the Bromley Council general page about Orpington is of more value than a link to each place in the town. Have a look at WP:NOT in the links section it will probably explain better than I have here.Mrsteviec 11:45, 7 February 2006 (UTC)
- Hi. I totally agree with your reply. Kind regards. Mrsteviec 16:01, 7 February 2006 (UTC)
London Buses
[edit]Hi. I noticed you edited London Buses routes 1-10 recently. Just to let you know, I'm splitting this page because the article will be too big once complete.
Also, as you live in Orpington, could you tell me what buses run in your area? I live in South-East London, and only know of route 208.
Thanks --sonicKAI 13:54, 8 February 2006 (UTC)

"Avoid redirect" counter to WP:D
[edit]Hello CarolGray. Thank-you for your contributions to Wikipedia.
I would like to invite you to look at my comments on Talk:Redding under the topic "Avoid redirect" counter to WP:D.
Thanks. Duckbill 16:12, 21 February 2006 (UTC)
Hello again. Of course most policies can be overridden by a more specific policy, or by a judgement call in certain special circumstances. WP:D lays down one policy, which so far I haven't found a case where there is a reason to go against, but if there are cases where there are reasons to go against, I'd be interested to find out. Thanks, Duckbill 16:52, 21 February 2006 (UTC)
Deutsches Schiffahrtsmuseum
[edit]Regarding your inquiry about basin vs. dock, I think basin may be more appropriate in that specific article - the ship was in fact kept in an indoor open container for 20 years and has never seen a dock in its modern life. --Doco 04:45, 17 March 2006 (UTC)
Watershed
[edit]I'm following up on apparent differences between definitions of "watershed". Could you explain exactly how you use the term, please? To me, "watershed", "drainage basin" and "catchment" are essentially synonymous, although I wouldn't use "watershed" for large basins. Cheers, Daniel Collins 16:11, 18 March 2006 (UTC).
- Thanks. After leaving the note I started searching. The OED is my first reference when confronted my multiple meanings, and I gathered the duality. I'm a Kiwi, a hydrologist, and have studied in the US for some time. There's a bias there, but I'm not sure how much in which way. I appreciate the duality and am working on amending the watershed page. I will likely be advocating the article explain the etymology of the word with an overview of the alternate meanings, and then point to water divide and drainage basin for a fuller treatment. Cheers, Daniel Collins 18:50, 18 March 2006 (UTC).
- A follow-up question: How far away from the true ridge does the watershed extend, using your looser definition? Is it the entire hillside entire you enter a channel? Daniel Collins 19:16, 18 March 2006 (UTC)
- Could you review a draft I wrote, please? Daniel Collins 19:56, 18 March 2006 (UTC).

Watershed (again)
[edit]Hi Carol,
Just thought I'd let you know I've put in an official request on WP:RM for the Watershed article (now merged with your drainage basin article) to be moved to Drainage basin. The process requires a list of Support or Oppose votes, so if you want to repeat the vote you made at Talk:Drainage basin, you can do so at Talk:Watershed#Requested Move. Disambiguation:List of post towns in the United Kingdom
[edit]Perhaps I'll stop working on disambiguating within this page for now as I see you're already doing it. I'm quite new to Wikipedia and have just installed popups. I wish / wonder if there was an even easier way to spot entries in need of DAB'ing. As you know, phrases are blue if they point to a valid link and red if they don't. Perhaps the colour or style scheme needs to be expanded: e.g. green for phrases which point to a valid link which is designed to redirect elsewhere; orange for phrases which point to a DAB page; purple for phrases where someone has tried to put in a link to a more meaningfully titled page but no page currently exists for it, e.g. I thought that Douglas would be better than just Douglas which would point to a DAB page (this example came from another page). Too many colours would not suit all readers because of the frequency of red-green colour blindness but it may be possible to have an option for turning on certain styles of type instead. What do you think? Samantha of Cardyke 12:47, 3 May 2006 (UTC)
- On another matter, I wonder if it would be possible for Wikipedia to list pages with any 'green', 'orange' or 'purple' phrases so readers can take up the task easily? There should be options so people can search for pages in order of when they were first created / last updated, by category, pages on their own Watchlist, etc. Again, what do you think? Samantha of Cardyke 12:47, 3 May 2006 (UTC)
Penwith
[edit]Nice going with the Penwith tidying :) - As you can see there is still a lot of work that needs doing on Penwith articles - A couple of us are trying to improve the quality/depth and have recently set up a project to organise things (yes I know the page is a bit of a mess at the moment, and doesn't look very professional!) I don't suppose that you would consider contributing to Penwith more regularly? We could use your skills. Let me know what you think Mammal4 15:21, 11 May 2006 (UTC)
Image Tagging Image:Orpington Pond CG.jpg
[edit]This media may be deleted.
|
Thanks for uploading Image:Orpington Pond CG.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then there needs to be an argument why we have the right to use the media on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then it needs to be specified where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.
If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media qualifies as fair use, consider reading fair use, and then use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
If you have uploaded other media, consider checking that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. -SCEhardT 19:27, 28 May 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks - looks perfect now! -SCEhardT 19:47, 28 May 2006 (UTC)
I have changed the order so the three places that were bold are now listed at the top as "cities". Does this meet your needs? I found three bold things in a long list quite distracting. --Scott Davis Talk 23:17, 28 June 2006 (UTC)
- Good. It looks quite embarrassing when some little town in the country gets listed first just because Australia is the first significant english-speaking country in the alphabet. I had never heard of any of the Wilmingtons in the United States, so didn't realise that three were large cities. I've never been to those states. - Not on the meaning of the Tiamats, but on the style of entries. Tiamat may refer to:
- Tiamat, a planet in The Snow Queen (novel)
- Tiamat, one of the Four Fiends in Final Fantasy
- Tiamat, a sea monster in Pirates of the Spanish Main
- Tiamat, a Zerg brood in StarCraft
- or Tiamat may refer to:
- The Snow Queen (novel), Tiamat is a fictional planet in Joan D. Vinge’s novels.
- Four Fiends, one of which is named Tiamat appear in the Final Fantasy games.
- Pirates of the Spanish Main, Tiamat is the name of a sea monster in the collectible strategy game.
- StarCraft, Tiamat is one of the Zerg broods in the Blizzard RTS game.
- (with appropriate italics, etc.). I've since added some pointers in WP:MOSDAB and aligned WP:D with that advice. No heat here (really!), but the participation was rather limited (me and one other editor, along with the merge proposer). -- JHunterJ 12:24, 3 October 2006 (UTC)

Redirect to Disambiguation template
[edit]There is nothing wrong with using that template. The reason why I removed it from those pages was because when you used it on those pages, it was used as R to (disambiguation) page. That template does not exist, and thus showed up as a broken redirect. If you remove the parentheses from around the word disambiguation, I uess it will work. Sorry for the confusion. --Willy No1lakersfan (Talk - Contribs) 12:19, 25 November 2006 (UTC)

I'm afraid that most tram stops are merely raised platforms, and hence no (or at least little) different from bus stops. I prod-ed it, but another editor has since AfD. Obviously some people do not agree with you. Since I see very little room for expansion, I though delete was the best option.
I recently prod-ed all the NET stop articles, and all but two were deleted, one now under AfD and looking like being deleted. Sadly, I feel this is how these will go.
I had the same idea with Supertram, and was in the process of creating articles, but was told that these were more appropriate on wikitravel.

Disambiguation
[edit]Hi,
Thanks for the kind word about Saint John. I hope I didn't accidentally remove anything that might have gone in the "See also" section. Some people believe that disambiguation pages should catalog all topics with similar names, for the benefit of readers' undirected exploration (although the MoS confines entries of this type to "See also".) I don't like this idea much, but pages like the previous version of "Saint John" inspire me to implement it, at least a little. --Smack (talk) 01:00, 22 February 2007 (UTC)
- Actually, I had a different page in mind when I wrote that. I removed many, many entries from Grünwald (diff). You see, someone had apparently done some genealogical research. --Smack (talk) 01:15, 22 February 2007 (UTC)
- I'm baffled about what to do with St. Johns. I looked through WP:DAB and WP:MOSDAB and found no guidance. --Smack (talk) 05:43, 25 February 2007 (UTC)
- It's not safe to assume that someone who grew up in New York went to the Saint John's University there rather than in Minnesota, although I'd say it's much more likely. In the US, the choice of location for one's schooling can be complicated. I grew up in the Los Angeles area, and am going to school elsewhere on the West Coast. As far as I remember, several people from my high-school class went to the East Coast, not necessarily because there are many good schools there, but just to go to the East Coast. However, probably half of the class stayed in the L.A. area. --Smack (talk) 18:48, 25 February 2007 (UTC)

Mount St. Mary's
[edit]I noticed you just separated out the three colleges and one university from Mount St. Mary's into Mount Saint Mary's College. There's a lot of disambiguation necessary between schools, universities, seminaries, and colleges, and the original disambig had been working well for almost two years. It looks like you might be working on a larger effort relating to saints... Is there a plan that I'm missing here? Otherwise, I think Mount Saint Mary's College should be reverted to a redirect, and Mount St. Mary's should remain the "disambiguation central" for the related articles. Justen 14:34, 4 March 2007 (UTC)
- I'm sorry for the confusion... By "reverted" I more precisely meant "restored." I'll make a point to use "restore," instead of "revert" in the future when I mean a mutually-agreed upon change! In any event, I think the original disambiguation would be best. I'll work on that. Justen 22:05, 4 March 2007 (UTC)
London Rowing Club
[edit]Spotted your disambiguation of the link to Henley. I would suggest though that the link is better made to Henley-on-Thames than to Henley Royal Regatta. Remenham Club has permanent buildings and land at Henley and although they are primarily used during the Regatta, that's not their only use; moreover Remenham Club isn't a formal part of the regatta organisation, its an entirely independent institution. James of Putney 17:22, 4 March 2007 (UTC)
Question re edits
[edit]Hi,
Can you explain why you've moved all the surnames out from the Holt disambiguation page? I see why you've cleaned it up and removed external links, etc., but as of now there's not even a link to the surname page, which surely a disambiguation page would have, and probably a list of people to whom Holt refers belongs there in the same way as the places and other meanings do.
Thanks, --Daniel11 08:25, 7 March 2007 (UTC)
Delinking dab page
[edit]Why?[1] That's what dab pages are for. Guettarda 19:05, 8 March 2007 (UTC)
- "I have added a link to the Belmont dab page for Belmont, Port of Spain. I didn't think there was a need for a link in the other direction"...umm, how not? How do you propose finding the pages that linked to that Belmont once the page is created, if you have removed their links to the dab page? Half the purpose of dab pages is to catch links to pages that don't exist yet. Guettarda 19:53, 8 March 2007 (UTC)
It's nice to take a less condescending tone when dealing with people. If I didn't think that an article could have been written about the topic, why would I have created all the links to Belmont, Trinidad and Tobago? Hitting people over the head with policy pages is rude - with a newbie, you should explain, not just link. With anyone else, you shouldn't start with the assumption that they are ignorant of policy.
I'm not sure how you came up with 11 articles that include this Belmont - I found 15:
- Port of Spain
- List of steelbands
- Albert Gomes
- List of schools in Trinidad and Tobago
- Andy Ganteaume
- Ellis Achong
- Laventille
- List of cities and towns in Trinidad and Tobago
- Claudia Jones
- Charlie Davis
- Ian Bishop
- Bryan Davis
- Morvant
- Ellis Clarke
- David Rudder
It would have been much simpler to explain what you did when I first asked - that you had pointed the dablink to the Port of Spain article. Simply saying "I have added a link to the Belmont dab page for Belmont, Port of Spain" sounds like you pointed the dablink to Belmont, Port of Spain, not to Port of Spain#Belmont. Guettarda 15:02, 9 March 2007 (UTC)
I should apologise too - I'm sure my tone was far more curt than it should have been. Sorry. Guettarda 21:19, 9 March 2007 (UTC)

Invitation to Wikipedia meetup in London
[edit]Date: 13:00 onwards, Sunday 10 August 2008
Venue: Penderel's Oak pub, Holborn WC1 map
More information: Wikipedia:Meetup/London 12
Hello,
I noticed that you have listed yourself as a Wikipedian in London, so I thought you might like to come to one of our monthly social meetups. The next one is going to be on Sunday 10 August, which might well be rather short notice, but if you can't come this time, we try to have one every second Sunday of the month.
If you haven't been before, these meetups are mainly casual social events for Wikipedia enthusiasts in which we chat about Wikipedia and any other topics we fancy. It's a great way to meet some very keen Wikipedians, but we'd also love for you to come along if you're interested in finding out more about Wikipedia, other Wikimedia projects, or other collaborative wiki projects too.
The location is a pub that is quite quiet and family friendly on a Sunday lunchtime, so hopefully younger Wikipedians will also feel welcome and safe. Alcohol consumption is certainly not required!
Although the meetups are popular, many UK-based editors still don't know about them. It would be great to welcome some fresh faces, so I hope you can come along.
Yours,
James F. (talk) 09:27, 3 August 2008 (UTC)

London Wikimedia Fundraiser
[edit]Good evening! This is a friendly message from Chase me ladies, I'm the Cavalry, inviting you to the London Wikimedia Fundraising party on 19th December 2010, in approximately one week. This party is being held at an artistic London venue with room for approximately 300 people, and is being funded by Ed Saperia, a non-Wikipedian who has a reputation for holding exclusive events all over London. This year, he wants to help Wikipedia, and is subsidising a charity event for us. We're keen to get as many Wikimedians coming as possible, and we already have approximately 200 guests, including members of the press, and some mystery guests! More details can be found at http://ten.wikipedia.org/wiki/London - expect an Eigenharp, a mulled wine hot tub, a free hog roast, a haybale amphitheatre and more. If you're interested in coming - and we'd love to have you - please go to the ten.wikipedia page and follow the link to the Facebook event. Signing up on Facebook will add you to the party guestlist. Entry fee is a heavily subsidised £5 and entry is restricted to over 18s. It promises to be a 10th birthday party to remember! If you have any questions, please email me at chasemewiki at gmail.com.
Hope we'll see you there, (and apologies for the talk page spam) - Chase me ladies, I'm the Cavalry (talk) 18:09, 12 December 2010 (UTC)

All Hail The Muffin Nor does it taste nice... 15:28, 5 February 2011 (UTC)
The article Lifted (music collective) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
- Zero coverage found in reliable sources; does not appear to meet WP:GNG or WP:MUSIC. Considered WP:CSD#G11 as well there are some obvious WP:NOTPROMOTION concerns.
While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Gongshow Talk 18:17, 17 February 2012 (UTC)
Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
