[edit]
Just now it says in the main article that Bennachie has a vitrified fort.
Is there any vitrification on Bennachie? Virtification refers to the melding of stone that is evident in ancient stone structures throughout North East Scotland (notably Dunideer). As far as I know there is no vitrification of the hillfort on Bennachie, although I could be wrong.
If it exists, where is it?
- What you said seemed right to me but it has taken me a long time to find a reference to say there is no vitrification. In the book I have added as a reference, in the chapter Prehistoric Communities in the Garioch it says "...this fort differed in its construction from that of the forts whose walls are now vitrified". Mountain?
[edit]I don't think Bennachie qualifies as a mountian, I'd have thought 3000ft would be the lower limit?
Cheers,

- "A mountain is generally higher and steeper than a hill, but there is considerable overlap, and usage often depends on local custom"; "in Scotland the term "mountain" is more subjective, often being used for hills exceeding 3,000 feet… as well as many lower hills which are distinctive or mountainous" (both quotes from mountain). --Stemonitis 12:07, 20 December 2006 (UTC)
I don't think there's any hard and fast rule on what height a hill has to be before it's considered a mountain, but in Britain it's commonly taken to be 2000ft.Nasty swimmer (talk) 21:10, 26 June 2012 (UTC)
Gaelic name
[edit]Isn't "breast" in Gaelic "cioch", rather than "ciche" which means "excrement"?Nasty swimmer (talk) 21:15, 26 June 2012 (UTC)
- The etymologies given here are folk analysis and not the standard scholarly etymology accepted for this mountain. It's etymology is generally thought to be 'mountain of the Ce', an important tribal group in the region during the Iron Age and early Middle Ages.
