Quirkyalone is a term used to refer to someone who enjoys being single (but is not opposed to being in a relationship) and generally prefers to be alone rather than dating for the sake of being in a couple.
It was coined by To-Do List magazine publisher Sasha Cagen who wrote a magazine article in 2000 and a book Quirkyalone: A Manifesto for Uncompromising Romantics (2004) ISBN 006057898X.
A website quirkyalone.net includes more information as well as an online quiz: Are you a quirkyalone? An online community internet forum is active with a few thousand registered users.
International Quirkyalone Day is February 14 and was chosen as an alternative to "the marketing barrage" of St. Valentine's Day. It started in 2003 as a "celebration of romance, freedom and individuality".
The Quirkys are annual awards similiar to the Oscars Academy Awards in such categories as Best Quirkyalone Movie of 2004, Best Quirkyalone TV Show of 2004, Best Quirkyalone Book of 2004, Lifetime Quirkyalone Achievement Award, and others.
Examples of people who are Quirkyalones as listed on the website include: Ally McBeal, Angelina Jolie, Cher, Cleopatra, Joan of Arc, Katharine Hepburn, Oprah Winfrey, Oscar Wilde, Ralph Nader, and Walt Whitman.
