[edit]How do you pronounce the band name?
thanks 68.49.142.108
- As i am aware, their name is pronounced "Goverment Mule" some one correct me if i am wrong. --Boothy443 | comhrÚ 02:32, 19 July 2005 (UTC)
- Yes, the band name is pronounced "Government Mule" even though it is spelled "Gov't Mule." Most of their fans simply call them "Mule" or "The Mule," however. KitHutch 21:49, 19 July 2005 (UTC)
- According to the LIVE ... WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM OUR FRIENDS box set, the Mule version of "Afro-Blue" was inspired by John Coltrane.KitHutch 21:27, 30 December 2005 (UTC)
- Inspired by, yes...but Afro Blue is not a song written by Coltrane...its written by Mongo Santamaria....and they play no other Coltrane songs. MSherrick 23:16, 30 December 2005 (UTC)
Contributors
[edit]Man, we really have to work on that section! Dave Schools the only outside contributor? What about Rob Barraco? Oteil? Chuck Leavell? Jimmy Herring? MSherrick 15:40, 29 December 2005 (UTC)
- Dave Schools is a major contributor to the group because he convinced the band NOT to break up in 2000. Schools convinced them to tour as the New School of Gov't Mule in 2001.
- No doubt to that...but he's still not the only one who helped them out....nor is he the only one who helped Warren and Matt decide to carry on. MSherrick 23:16, 30 December 2005 (UTC)
two questions
[edit]- Can we expand on the "famous rockstars love Mule" part, or leave it out? If its only James Hetfield, I dont think anyone cares.
- Also, does anyone have citations for these "famous rockstars love Mule" parts? [[[User:Bo-Anerges|Bo-Anerges]] 06:29, 7 September 2006 (UTC)]
- Can we get a more comprehensive list of Mule links other than the official sites and one "my way or the highway" yahoo group? There's plenty more out there that someone might think is interesting or relatable.
- I'm actually looking for the historical reference for "Government Mule", the saying. Not the band. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.173.82.194 (talk) 21:03, 30 September 2008 (UTC)
Proposal on categorizing "Taper-friendly bands"
[edit]Hi, I've created a proposal for categorizing "taper-friendly bands", aka "bands that allow taping" within Wikipedia, and I wanted to invite people interested in this article to offer comments and feedback, since the Mule are one of the most prominent bands in the category. The proposal is at User:Xtifr/BTAT, and I'd be very interested to hear what people have to say about my suggestions. Let me know whatcha think. Thanks, Xtifr 11:12, 16 September 2006 (UTC)
Fair use rationale for Image:DoseCD.jpg
[edit]Image:DoseCD.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Etymology
[edit]Whence the interesting name? Anything to do with mule (smuggling) or money mule? --BDD (talk) 04:31, 13 July 2012 (UTC)
- I'm quite certain that it's in reference to 40 acres and a mule. See above comments wherein someone else was likewise curious about this.RadioKAOS (talk) 07:02, 13 July 2012 (UTC)
- This appeared in my news feed out of the blue. Evidently, it's a new article based on a decade-old interview, which explains why it mentions Jorgen Carlsson instead of Kevin Scott. Anyway, I don't believe I've heard this explanation before:
Don't know if it helps, but I thought I'd throw it out there. RadioKAOS / Talk to me, Billy / Transmissions 13:01, 11 October 2024 (UTC)As you might expect of a band named after a term from the Deep South that describes a woman with a large posterior

Discography
[edit]The discography could be expanded, even easily branched out to a sub-article, to include other appearances. The following come to mind: Hempilation, Welcome to Little Milton, the Hound Dog Taylor tribute, Bonnaroo/Austin City Limits/similar compilations, the Warren Haynes Christmas Jam compilations, etc. There are also promotional releases out there. 1990'S Section
[edit]The band did not cover Nirvana, Pearl Jam or Soundgarden on their Live With A Little Help From Our Friends release. A check of the wikipedia page for the album clarifies that. They possibly did a cover now and again, but didn't do anything significant from either of those bands until Halloween 2008. There's nothing substantial claiming those acts as influences, either. 12.15.136.25 (talk) 21:54, 21 December 2018 (UTC)
- Those groups have been removed from the 1990s section. KitHutch (talk) 02:45, 23 December 2018 (UTC)
Schools Never a Member
[edit]Dave Schools was never a member of Gov't Mule. He was one of the touring bassists during the Deep End Years. Even the Gov't Mule website says so. Read the following:
It’s also important to point out the people that helped keep Gov’t Mule alive; people like Chuck Leavell, Oteil Burbridge, Dave Schools, Rob Barraco, Mike Gordon, Les Claypool, Jason Newsted, George Porter Jr., Greg Rzab, Audley Freed, Karl Denson and Andy Hess — all who came on the road with us at a time when we weren’t sure if we could continue. Andy, of course, went on to join the band from 2003 to 2008, bringing his own personality to the music.

Gov’t Mule discography
[edit]Somebody needs to add their Georgia Bootleg Box Set to the discography here. I looked at adding it myself but couldn't figure out how to. It is a six disc official release of their early live shows from '96 that came out in 2011. Can someone help me with this? Sj9041066 (talk) 12:34, 23 December 2023 (UTC)
