Name of Upcoming Danzig Studio Album

I removed an incorrect statement that Danzig's next studio album may be called Danzig 9 or Danzig IX. Glenn has said many times that 777 was the last Danzig album to be numbered, as that completed the cycle, which is why Circle of Snakes is not known as "Danzig 8".

Darkest Album?

Currently, the article states that I Luciferi is Danzig's darkest album. I disagree, I think Danzig 4 is his darkest. Even Danzig 6, while not nearly as popular, is darker in tone than 777. However, I will agree that 777 has some of his darkest songs, such as The Coldest Sun. Any thoughts?Skullord 23:47, 7 March 2006 (UTC)

Unless its blatantly obvious that an album is much darker than any other the band has made (possibly The Cure's Pornography) it would be POV to even suggest it. For a band like Danzig it doesn't seem appropriate to label 1 album "darker" than the rest. marnues 03:45, 1 May 2006 (UTC)

Merge

Merge with Samhain ? Discuss.

Although the band Danzig is an evolution of Samhain, I think there's enough distinction between the two bands to warrant them each having their own page. I think most people view the two bands as very different entities. Besides, if we merge Samhain and Danzig, then one could argue that we could merge The Misfits and Samhain. And if that were to happen, then why not merge all three bands with the Glenn Danzig page? Skullord 20:59, 13 January 2006 (UTC)

Black Aria and other.

Why are Black Aria and Black Aria II included in the discography? Both are solo albums by Glenn and not a band endeavor. Both are also clearly accounted for on the Glenn Danzig page as solo albums.

Genre

So I'm pretty much new to Danzig (I love the Misfits though) but I'm having a problem with their genre. It seems that most people on the internet try not to touch the subject. Here it currently states Heavy Metal (Doom on one album). But it seems to me that they fall square into the alt metal genre. Am I way off? marnues 05:26, 1 May 2006 (UTC)

Thanks to whoever changed the genre to include alt metal for me but now I see that what I thought was alternative influence is really just hard rock. So much that I'm not sure if I should even call Danzig a heavy metal band or a hard rock band. marnues 20:04, 27 August 2006 (UTC)

Genre classification is really subjective. Hard Rock and Heavy Metal covers them pretty well. Alt Metal seems to describe bands like Tool and Janes Addiction.Cannibaltom 03:46, 28 August 2006 (UTC)

Trivia section: a minor RfC

Posting here to avoid a revert war when discussion could solve the issue. Some trivia sections are arguably necessary for an article, but the one in this article is more trivial than most, which is why I removed it. It was just recently restored by a user with the rationale that "for a band like Danzig trivia sections are necessary". However, tidbits like "Samples from "Mother" were used on a 2008 Fox Network television commercial, to promote their new series "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles." aren't even debateable. They're encyclopedically useless and should be removed. There's nothing in the entire section that could even maybe, kinda, sorta be integrated into the article. It's just random, useless junk. I entirely agree. That videos have been featured on Beavis and Butthead, for instance is utterly unencyclopedic, as is the appearance of posters in 8mm. The lyric comment is unsourced so needs removing anyway. The use of "Mother" in various games etc. could be incorporated into an article about the song, but not this one. There is basically no way of incorporating the elements of the trivia section into the article, so it needs deleting. Blackmetalbaz (talk) 17:45, 18 August 2008 (UTC)

Genre

That will most likely be a very debatable subject, since most typical (modern) BM has a very distinct sound that Danzig doesn't quite fall into. However, I do agree with you that back in the 80s Danzig would no doubt be among the darker metal acts, like Mercyful Fate, but probably more in a "proto-Black" fashion. The Deseret News throwaway source

I noticed that the source [1] in the opening paragraph isn't that well informed. It seems like the author isn't familiar with the bands he's reviewing. To prove my point:

1. When did Danzig become "doom metal"? That implies that Danzig was inspired directly by Trouble, Candlemass, St. Vitus, etc. That's not the case. I've never read any interview of his him admitting to that. He took his inspiration directly from Black Sabbath. (And being inspired by Black Sabbath doesn't make you a doom metal band, either. Cannibal Corpse is directly influenced by Sabbath, for one).

2. About Type O Negative's set: "'She's in Love with Herself' and 'Loving You Is Like Loving the Dead' were also among the wonderfully dreary offerings." Those two aren't TON songs. They're actually two subparts of the band's greatest hit, "Black No. 1". That's like going a Led Zeppelin show in the 1970s and saying that the best song of the set was "All that Glitters is Gold" (instead of "Stairway to Heaven"!)

3. "Godflesh played a 30-minute, punk-inspired show comprised mostly of songs taken from the recent release "Selfless." How is it that an industrial metal pioneer played a "punk-inspired show"? The mentioned album, Selfless isn't punk rock either.

Beginnings (1986-1987)

From Rick Rubin watching Samhain in the 1986 New Music Seminar to the debut recording on the Less than Zero soundtrack. This section stays the same as the original.

"Classic" era (1988-1993)

New Chronology: Danzig (1988) / Danzig II: Lucifuge (1990) / Danzig III: How the Gods Kill (1992) / Thrall - Demonsweatlive (1993).

In other words: from the debut's release to Thrall/Demonsweatlive EP and the sudden success of "Mother".

"Industrial" era (1994-2001)

New Chronology: 4p (1994) / Danzig 5: Blackacidevil (1996) / Danzig 6:66 - Satan's Child (1999) / Live On the Black Hand Side (2001).

It seems that most people assume that "Industrial Danzig" started with Blackacidevil. Although subtler, this trend started earlier, on 4p. This record has all the hallmarks of industrial metal. A few examples: the processed vocals on the chorus of "Canstpeak"; the distorted bass drum of "Until You Call On the Dark"; the siren sound effect of "Bringer of Death"; the loops & samples on "Sadistikal" and the dissonant chords on "Dominion" & "Stalker". The fact that 4p with the original line-up's doesn't impact much on Danzig's musical vision; Glenn has always been the sole composer of the band (apart from Rick Rubin's counsel). I'd say that this era ends with the release of Live On the Black Hand Side; the second CD has a live set from the Danzig 6:66 tour.

Return to form (2002-2011)

New Cronology: I Luciferi (2002) / Circle of Snakes (2004) / Deth Red Sabaoth (2010).

All these records a "return to the roots", so I believe we can place them together. It ends on 2011 because this was the last year of the Deth Red Sabaoth tour. I think we can collapse Later years (2000–2005) / (2006–2009) into this one section.

Recent Activity (2012-)

New Cronography: Sketeletons (2015) / Black Laden Crown (2017) / Danzig Sings Elvis (2020).

Less news on the musical front. Records with original material take longer to release (7 years). Two cover albums, 5 years apart.
