Liberalism stub ?

[edit]

In France, Simone Veil is known to be a centrist. Besides, she only participated in center-to-center-right governments, never to socialist ones...—Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.234.110.221 (talk) 12:14, 3 June 2005 (UTC)[reply]

In the United States, the current common meaning of "liberal" is "left-wing". However, this is not the case in Europe. In France, libéral tends to mean "right-winger in favour of free markets; however, it can allude to a wider tradition of government leaving freedoms to the people. Simone Weil probably fits that latter definition, if only for her fight for keeping government intervention out of the personal choices of women and couples. damehood

[edit]

As she is an honourary DBE, not being a Commonwealth national, she shouldn't be entitled as Dame Simone Veil.—Preceding unsigned comment added by Iain southern (talkcontribs) 20:06, 6 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Her EXACT class should be SOURCED. Isn't she GBE ?!. Jatayou (talk) 15:59, 24 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Simone Veil

Simone Veil (née Jacob; 13 July 1927 – 30 June 2017) was a French magistrate and politician who served as Health Minister in several governments and was President of the European Parliament from 1979 to 1982, the first woman to hold that office. As health minister, she is best remembered for advancing women's rights in France, in particular for the 1975 law that legalized abortion in France, today known as Veil Act (French: Loi Veil). From 1998 to 2007, she was a member of the Constitutional Council, France’s highest legal authority. She is shown here receiving the Centennial Award at the first Four Freedoms Award ceremony in 1982.
